Item S154 N:
6,3/4" Madonna with child and baby St. John (Madonna of the chair).
This beautiful Della Robbia ceramic plaque is hand made in Italy.
It has two holes on the top border to be hanged.
It can be placed outdoors in the garden or in the home for decoration (in Italy you actually see these pieces outdoors, cemented to the wall, as a benediction to the house, since people have them blessed).
The motive is inspired by one of the most famous and most reproduced images that has the Madonna with child as subject: The Madonna Della Seggiola, (Madonna of the Chair) the original painting of 1514 by Raffaello (Italy, Florence, Palazzo Pitti, Galleria Palatina).
The image illustrates the Madonna sitting on a chair (the “seggiola” or “chair” can be seen from the side ) with the Child in her harms and St. John child next to them, holding a cross.
This is a referral to the apocryphal topic of the meeting of St. John with Jesus Child, as the two met when they were still in the womb of the respective mothers and then in adult age in the desert when he introduces Christ to the people as the only Messiah.
